Creative therapy is the therapeutic use of art making, within a professional relationship, by people who experience illness, trauma or challenges in living, and by people who seek personal development. Through the creation of art and reflecting upon the products and processes, people can increase their ability to cope with symptoms, stress and traumatic experiences; enhance cognitive abilities; and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of making art.
The aim of creative therapies is to help people find a form of expression beyond words or traditional therapy. The scope of creative therapy is as limitless as the imagination in finding healthy modes of expression. The most commonly used approaches include art therapy, writing, sand play, clay, movement therapy, psychodrama, role play, and music therapy.
